About Us

IYA HAUWA FOUNDATION (IHF) is a Non-governmental, Non-profit, Non-political Organization. The Foundation was named after Hajiya Hauwa Adamu (IYA HAUWA), an Aunty to the founder – Hauwa Umar Aliyu. The foundation was established in August 31st, 2016 and was registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) with registeration no CAC/IT/NO 90383 as an Incorporated Trustees. The overarching goal of IHF is to promote and support sustainable livelihoods in rural and nomadic communities in Northern Nigeria. In line with the transformative promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), IHF focuses on strategic interventions aimed at empowering women, youths and people with special needs in vulnerable and excluded communities in Northern Nigeria. The SDGs are a universal call to action to end poverty, safeguard the planet and ensure all people enjoy peace and prosperity by the year 2030. Thus, to ‘leave-no-one-behind’ in this Decade of Action for the SDGs, IHF will strengthen its interventions and support in the areas of education, healthcare, Promote Peaceful coexistence and livelihood support. Taken together, these will support the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Founder

Hauwa Umar Aliyu (Hauwa Birniwa) was born in Rugga (Nomadic Communities) and was brought up by her aunt (Haj Hauwa Adamu/Iya Hauwa) in Kano. Hajia Iya Hauwa took Hauwa to Schools to acquire both Islamic and Western Education.

Hauwa is an educationist and community development advocate that ensures the commitment and involvement of local authorities and community members in the implementation of sustainable development initiatives, as well as support the process to form networks with various stakeholders such as development partners, private sector, research organizations and academic institutions in mobilizing their support on sustainable development initiatives. She has significant experience working with Development Partners, particularly the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) Programmes, as a full-time and short-term consultant (most times on a pro-bono basis) in the education and health sectors. One of her community-based education and community development experience in working with nomads across several states in northern Nigeria. She played a central role in establishing one hundred and eight (108) nomadic Fulani community-based schools by the support of Education, sector support programme in Nigeria (ESSPIN/DFID). Hauwa has previously served as a Special Assistant (S.A) to the Jigawa State Governor on Women Empowerment, supporting the Government in initiating programmes that enhanced women’s lives through job creation, skills acquisition and entrepreneurship programmes. Prior to that, she worked with the Jigawa State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MOST) as a classroom teacher as well as a Vice-Principal. Hauwa’s other experience also extends to the area of planning and implementation of maternal and child health programmes.

Presently, she is volunteering for many organizations for the development of her country. She founded Iya Hauwa Foundation (https://ihf.org.ng), an organisation founded to support and empowers rural and nomadic communities in Northern Nigeria through education, health and life skills development opportunities.

She holds undergraduate degree in Education from BUK, Post graduate Diploma in Community Health from AMREF University Nairobi Kenya, Postgraduate diploma in Education, Health Promotion and International Development from University College London (UCL), MSc Sustainable Development from University of Sussex and currently doing her PhD in International Education and Development at the University of Sussex.
